Achieve Freedom Through Mobility Aids

Posted: under Reference.

Foundation

Mobility – it’s only pretty much possible to value what mobility means if your ability to move around freely might be diminished, then it takes on a entire new meaning. Coping with another person who’s partially disabled gives me an insight into the kind of issues that people with disabilities have to deal with. When you are fit enough as well as sure footed there isn’t any real awareness with the disadvantage of not having extensive mobility of your person. Besides which nobody is particularly concerned unless it has to do with them directly.

All of us take it entirely for granted when everything functions as it should and we get on with living our lives concentrating on making money, raising a family, having a good time and other such mainstream everyday things. In actual fact often we never even like to look at those who are handicapped and only just coping because it makes us aware of our own vulnerability which reminds us of our mortality. Next time you see another person who’s in a wheel chair, understand your own reaction to that individual, and be aware of how a person skip eye contact and meticulously get out of the way. Folks that have wheelchairs more often than not state how folks they speak to will speak with the carer and ignore them like they are stupid in addition deaf.

Early Disability Aids

The first type of disability aid that most people will be familiar with is the walking stick. For some, it will be something to make them feel more steady on their feet when they suffer some impairment in walking. If a person has a broken leg or hip then crutches for a period of time will be needed and later a stick until full mobility returns. When I broke my hip I found the most frustrating thing was that I could not carry a cup of tea from one place to another so I improvised with a trolley on wheels which I could push along. When you have to use two arm crutches as I did to get about, there are no arms left to carry anything. For non spilling things you can use a bag to carry your things in which can be attached to your crutches, but not cups of liquid. Recently when visiting my husband in hospital I watched while the nurses unpacked a Zimmer frame on which they attached a plastic box with a tray for a lid. It was fixed like a basket on a bike. The patient had to practice pushing it along, and I realised it was because he lived on his own and needed to be able to transport things but couldn’t manage without two handed support. These types of early aids are common for people as they get older and lose their youthful mobility because of age related problems. They’re also necessary if you have endured accidents and bones being broken so that temporary mobility is impacted.

Freedom

One of the major frustrations for people becoming disabled is their loss of independence and freedom to be able to do what they want, when they want. If a person becomes disabled after years of normal living and independence there will be a great deal of  angst and a need to make adjustments to the new situation. However, whatever the disability experienced there are a vast range of aids to help people live as independent a life as possible.

These days the physically impaired can obtain freedom and independence through the use of a mobility scooter, such as the Pride Libre scooter reaches 4 mph. Do some searching online to get a really good value mobility supplier for information on the very best prices in the market.

In the Home

When suffering loss of mobility or normal functioning whatever the reason, the first task is to create safety and functionality in the home where the level of disability determines the type of support needed.

One of the first things to consider is the level of comfort while resting. Correct support in bed and while sitting in a chair will allow the muscles to relax properly so that the body will function as well as possible. There are a range of Orthopaedic beds which allow for many different positions from lying to sitting and the best examples are the hospital beds where you will find electronic buttons to change the position of a patient with ease. Chairs can also be found that will allow for different positions and even a vibrating and massaging function incorporated into the frame. A friend of mine had a chair specially made which reclines, vibrates and massages in three different places and also tips forward when you want to get out for ease of standing up. When we visit we all want a go in it as it is such great fun.

The next trial when disabled, is the function of toilet, bathing and dressing. There are a huge range of aids to chose from such as commodes and other toilet necessities, grab rails for showers and baths. My mother is severely arthritic and cannot get into the bath anymore, so she has a seat which lowers and raises her in and out of the bath. There are also walk in baths and then specially adapted showers with stools and slip mats to aid the sufferer. Also as my mother is partially sighted she can’t see the numbers any longer, so she has a set of speaking weighing scales.

Having managed the getting up, washing and dressing as well as maybe a good rest in the special chair, moving around the residence will be next on the agenda. Depending of the level of incapacity it might be that a simple walking stick or Zimmer frame will support mobility. As well as grab handles in the bathroom, handles can be mounted alongside entrance doors and steps to help with negotiating different levels. Just because people suffer some sort of disability it doesn’t mean that they want to leave their homes, but when they live in a house and have stairs to negotiate then the use of a stair lift is a wonderful invention. Severely handicapped people may need a wheelchair in the home which needs lots of space or room and probably larger doorways for it.

The next activity for independent living is food preparation and dining. Standing can be a problem so a high stool to perch on might be helpful. Otherwise do as much preparation as possible sitting at the kitchen/dining table. If a person has a problem with holding cutlery and kitchen utensils, there are specially adapted items with larger handles for ease of use. With arthritis in the wrists, lifting items such as kettles and saucepans can be a problem, but there are available cleverly designed kettle and teapot tippers for ease of pouring. Using a food processer and electric gadgets will save a great deal of time and effort when preparing meals. Another simple aid which my mother found very useful is a grabbing stick or ‘Reacher’ that picks up items to save bending down.

While in control of the four wheeled mobility scooter a superb pavement sense is essential so that people don’t run over other pedestrians.

Maintaining the home is sometimes difficult for a disabled person. Obviously there are washing machines, dryers and dishwasher to aid with tasks in the home but you can also get remote control vacuum cleaners that are radio controlled with a joystick or key pad such as for toy boats and aeroplanes. Long handled brushes and dusters help with hard to reach corners particularly the microfiber dusters that attract dirt and dust to them.

Other items available for people who suffer some level of limitation may be lever type handles for taps to make them easier to use. If a person has lost their grip there are special items to open cans, bottles and jars. Because my mother is partially sighted she has large buttons on her telephone and speed dialling so she can stay in touch with her family who are spread far and wide. She can order goods by phone which means with such aids she is able to retain her independence and stay in her own home. It seems that whatever the disability there is some clever invention to help overcome the problem.

Outside the Home

To enable a person who is disabled to live as normal a life as possible then aids outside the home are just as important as those inside. Wearing an alarm cord around the neck is a wise precaution so that if a person does get into difficulties while outside they can call for help. To be able to move around easily outside may only require a walking stick or a Zimmer frame for support but where mobility is more restricted, wheelchairs or electric scooters may be necessary. My mother used to love to garden but now the arthritis and osteoporosis has taken hold and her eyesight is impaired, she is severely limited in any activity outside. On a good day however she does have a garden stool which enables her to do some weeding and tidying of the flower beds. There are even wheeled seats for moving along the edge of flower beds when weeding. Long handled garden implements can be used to avoid bending or kneeling and raised beds will allow even wheel chair users to tackle the garden plot. Ramps may be installed to allow a wheelchair to move from one level to another, and sit-on lawn mowers are a possibility if you have a big enough lawn.

There is a relatively new product on the market called Flexiloc which is a modular system of tough polyurethane tiles that interlocks to form ramps of any size. It has the advantage of being able to run straight, turn corners, be used indoors or outdoors and has a good grip surface that is more comfortable than conventional surfaces. It can be used as a temporary solution where a permanent ramp is unsuitable and is easily dismantled to be reused again and again.

If a disabled person relies on a wheelchair then automatic gates and garage doors which open remotely is a big help. Cars or vans used for transporting electric scooters are usually specially modified vehicles with ramps or lifts to allow the mobility scooter to be loaded up. Sometime cars may have to be adapted to allow for the lack of functioning of particular limbs. My husband cannot manage the foot pedal movement required for gear changing so we have switched to an automatic car to enable him to still drive.

There is a choice of three and 4 wheeled kinds of all terrain mobility scooter however it is necessary to realise that although the three wheeled version is more manoeuvrable it is a bit less stable.

There is a vast range of mobility scooters available both new and second hand. The mobility scooter is mostly a four wheeled vehicle which travels between four and eight miles an hour. However for the electric scooter there seems to be more three wheeled versions which travel at a maximum of six miles per hour. The speed is determined on the weather, the terrain and riders weight. A three wheeled scooter is inherently less stable and unless greater manoeuvrability is required it is better to get the four wheeled variety. Some scooters can be completely folded up to go into the boot of a car. The scooter usually has a chair with arms mounted over the battery enclosure with handlebars like a bike for turning and controls in reach of the hands. They are very easy to operate and comfortable to ride. The chairs vary with the amount of padding and enclosed back, usually the more expensive the more padding there is.

As well as the open versions of mobility scooters there are enclosed ones to protect the passenger from rain and wind. These come with lights, windscreen wipers, full suspension, mirrors and lockable doors as with a car and can cover larger distances. I have seen them in my local area travelling along the road rather than on the pavement.

Home Remote Controls

Where an individual is physically unable to get about inside or outside the home the use of remote controls is a valuable aid. Being able to manage and operate your entertainment centre remotely is only one of the possibilities. The availability of remote controls for opening and closing of blinds and curtains, switches for electrical equipment such as ovens, lights, cooking appliance and washing machines, is essential. For people who cannot easily answer the door there is a keyless door entry system designed to fit most latch locks which enable the elderly, the disabled and partially sighted who have difficulty using keys, to manage their security remotely.

One story I read in the paper a few weeks ago was of a young man who was so obese, in the region of forty stone, that he could not move out of his bed. He had an entertainment centre in his room remotely controlled and he ordered food online to be delivered to his house. There were three healthcare workers in attendance at all times to turn him in bed and see to his bodily needs; as well as people to make for him the food he had ordered. He was waiting for a stomach operation to staple his stomach together to reduce his intake of food. And all this was paid for by the tax payer. My feeling was that if there was no one to take such good care of him he would soon lose weight because he would not be able to get about and eat all that food.

Conclusion

For the people who have been born with a physical disability, may never know what it is like to be fully mobile and they may constantly yearn to live an ordinary life. For those who were once completely functional, when they become disabled they have to come to terms with their loss and face up to their own mortality. If the time comes when you are no longer able to do all the things you used to do, then be sure there are numerous creative aids to help you maintain as much self-sufficiency as possible.

How to control your Software Licenses

Posted: under Reference.

Introduction

The degree to which computing has become a part of everyday life and everyday commerce has forced a change in the way management approaches how they manage the finances, the tasks and the assets within a business.

As computing becomes more widespread within a business and takes a more prominent role within the vital processes of that organisation, it is important to make sure that an appropriate amount of attention is applied to this computing. Technological assets that may have once been overlooked are now important factors in the decision making process.

Technology have come a long way over the past few years and are now seen as vital elements of any organisation. As such, they receive grander budgets but must also be able to manage a larger amount of work. There is an eternal race between business needs and IT capabilities.

But once you have spent a large amount of your budget on developing your IT infrastructure and seen the circumstances of your organisation change, how do you ensure that the systems you are using can keep up with demand?

This is the role undertaken by IT management software and systems.

Every business and every situation will have different requirements and will create unique problems. To meet these needs there are a range of different technologies and approaches that can be used to help manage the IT network of your business. One of these options is discussed below.

Software Asset Management

SAM ( Software Asset Management) is built to do exactly what it says on the tin – monitoring and controlling the deployment and usage of software packages within your business. It is a business process rather than a distinct skill and is becoming a more critical part of the modern business environment, particularly for corporations operating in the field of Information Technology.

SAM is not simply a program for technicians installing software across a large company network, but can be a crucial tool to help improve performance at many levels of a organisation. The objectives of SAM include controlling of the IT infrastructure within a organisation, negating legal risks associated with incorrect software license usage and maintaining high levels of productivity by making sure software is up to date and fit for its purpose. As IT usage in an organisation grows, so do the potential benefits of SAM.

The practice of SAM is often thought of as an unnecessary evil due to the intangible nature of what it is designed to deal with, and the business case for employing a SAM solution is not always obvious until a broad inspection of the software infrastructure of a company has been undertaken. Once existing problems have been highlighted however, the use of SAM becomes self evident.

Economic benefits remain the most driving commercial factor when choosing to operate SAM technology within a company. Every corporation needs to make money after all and profitability is a very measurable figure.

An increasingly large amount of a company’s IT bank roll is spent on software licensing so there is a real need to invest to correctly manage this spending. As companies expand and diversify, their software requirements can change greatly and equipment and software can swiftly become out of date. There is no requirement to spend money to maintain the licenses on this outdated software, which is where software asset management really delivers an edge.

SAM is not restricted to simply the technology of your business either. As a management process it will often include many of the branches within a company, including Finance Human Resources, to make sure that it runs as efficiently as possible.

One highly recommend SAM package claim Centennial resellers has to be SAM.Suite; a modern solution to modern IT licensing challenges.

Why follow a SAM Strategy?

Having seen the many benefits of utilising a SAM solution, how do you know that it would be right for your organisation? Each business is different and has its own separate set of problems and advantages, so any strategy you will use needs to be catered to these specific characteristics.

There are more than simply monetary benefits that can be gained through the control of licensing and maintenance agreements across a companies IT system. Productivity can be greatly by ensuring that employees have the latest editions of software permitted under current licenses held, and communication inside the corporation is aided when support staff know exactly what is installed on every workstation under their control. The benefits of SAM are not confined to the technological hardware of your business.

Cost Savings

As discussed before, perhaps the most convincing reason to implement SAM within your company is the potential financial savings that can be made. The profitability of your business is always going to be the bottom line so any system that can help to improve this profitability by lowering expenses is one that should be considered. Money can be saved in a multitude of ways.

The most immediate way that software asset management can help to lower costs is by identifying any software running on your corporate IT system that is no longer necessary. The software might not be being used any longer, it may be very outdated to be of use or it may be duplicated on your system. SAM can help to remove this unnecessary overhead.

By clearing these items of software that are no longer a help to the running of your business you are streamlining a large chunk of your IT network. Paying for unnecessary software licenses and support and maintenance agreements means that more finance can be spent on the essential sections of your IT system. Focusing your attention on these critical components will improve the overall performance of your IT department.

Mitigate Risk Factors

A surprising percentage of software that is currently used in the corporate environment is either licensed incorrectly or not licensed at all. Running any amount of uncontrolled software on your IT network is not advised, because when left unchecked it can become incredibly unpredictable.

Rogue software applications can be introduced into an unmonitored IT environment in a number of ways. Software may have been included when your IT hardware was first purchased although the initial software licenses may have expired. Without the correct control policies in place, users may also be able to load their own software onto the network. Running a corporate IT system in this unmanaged way will almost certainly lead to trouble.

The risk of running unlicensed software on your system is clear. When anything goes wrong with the hardware or software platform behind your vital processes, how do you manage the situation? Operating a complex software system without the correct support can create a metaphorical minefield when it comes to disaster recovery and can seriously inhibit your responsiveness to unpredictable events. The cost of recovery will always outweigh the cost of prevention when it comes to data systems.

The financial case for working with a full-time Centennial vendor throughout your IT audit process has never been stronger.

Implementing Software Asset Management in your Organisation

As previously discussed, there are many potential advantages to employing a good SAM strategy within your business, both monetary and otherwise. It is therefore important to consider which elements of software asset management you should implement first since some benefits will be realised more speedily than others.

The discovery process can be seen as three primary areas that have to be performed to really develop an accurate picture of the deployment of IT assets within your company. These are:

Inventory

Inventory is the most basic function of the discovery cycle. It is vital that an accurate inventory of IT assets within your business is created to aid your IT managers to maintain baselines regarding your IT system. This inventory process must be performed before carrying on with discovery.
Fortunately, this process can now be automated and even the grandest of infrastructures can be searched and analysed in a relatively short period of time. Inventory should be able to identify your IT assets regardless of their geographical location or computing characteristics. Modern inventory processes are capable of this.

Capture

The next step in the discovery cycle involves the capture of the license entitlements that cover the software assets identified in the inventory. The capture process should collect entitlements for all of the software that exists on your network, even if the software is not currently used.

The factor of human error can be avoided by using automated tools that are specifically designed to create a library of license entitlements. Tools that are currently employed are incredibly efficient at capturing accurate information. These tools will also maintain databases containing up to date information from IT vendors.

Identification & Validation

The next process is to match up the software inventory to the repository of licensing data that were built in the last two stages. Errors may have occurred anywhere from the original invoices for software to the most recent audits performed on your IT network. These errors can now be rectified.

One crucial factor in the validation stage is the ability to combine the license entitlements within your system to your company’s proof of entitlement. This will be vital if any disputes with software resellers arise as a consequence of the discovery process. You want to be as informed as possible in these circumstances.

After these steps have been undertaken you will have created an incredibly detailed image of how your IT network is serving software programs to its users. It will be much simpler to identify any trouble areas on your system, or sections of software use that are no longer of any practical benefit to your operations. This detailed picture can be used for future strategies as well.

You can now commence a period of reconciliation on your network. You can compare the software packages that are actually used on your network against the licensing and support entitlements that you are paying for and bridge any gaps between the two. This is when the financial benefits of software asset management start to take effect.

The software spread in your system may include many hundreds or even thousands of individual installations, and there may be any number of restrictions that may be involved with the licensing agreements you have in place. It is therefore essential to automate the reconciliation process, using one or more tools to apply intelligent rules to the process. These rules can be catered to the specific needs of your company

The use SAM within your company is a very specific process which should be strategised by a capable Centennial reseller who will have more information.

Compliancy and Flexibility with SAM

Many of the fundamental practices of a modern SAM strategy are based upon the concepts set out in the Information Technology Infrastructure Library, or ITIL. This library details a number of ideas and best practices that should be followed for successful management of IT operations.

This library is a dynamic entity and is often updated with new concepts and techniques that cater to the ever changing IT backdrop of modern business. A good software asset management strategy should be flexible enough to follow the guidelines laid out in the ITIL whilst matching the changing requirements of the business within which it is actively utilised.

The International Standard Organisation (ISO) has created a standard that applies directly to software asset management practices. This standard, ISO 19770-1, is an exceptionally comprehensive set of guidelines that are built to ensure that SAM is utilised in such a way as to “satisfy corporate governance requirements”. Standards of this kind play an important role in achieving standardisation across an industry.

The ISO standard should certainly be adhered to when planning a software asset management strategy for your own organisation, although the level of detail included within can easily become a daunting prospect. It is important to remember that no matter what guidelines you follow when designing a SAM strategy, whatever plan you decide to implement needs to aid your organisation rather than hinder it. Industry standards cannot simply be copied when it comes to applying them within your organisation.

Creating a complete and comprehensive software asset management strategy for your own organisation might actually never come to fruition. Your plan must be flexible to change and mature as your organisation does, and it should allow for updates to your daily activities, no matter how trivial or fundamental they might be.

Conclusion

It is easy to see that as the extent and importance of IT systems within your company grow, so does the requirement for correct and efficient monitoring of these systems. Gone are the times when an IT branch was a bonus that would sometimes progress the business. IT systems are now critical to the modern organisation.

As with other branches of any organisation, a number of different plans should be considered and utilised in order to ensure the smooth running of daily tasks. SAM should not be the only tactic used to manage computing assets within your organisation, but rather one of a number of complimentary policies used to control the system as a unit. software asset management can go a long way toward aiding your company but should be supported by other strategies.

So if you think that your business is currently suffering from a lack of planned monitoring and management over its IT network, or that the possible advantages outlined in this article could provide a critical market advantage over your competitors, then it would be worth researching how software asset management could be employed within your organisation.

Babies And Diapers

Posted: under Reference.

When my child was a baby, I hated buying diapers. There are too many different styles and sizes to choose from. Why can diapers not just be diapers? There were so many times that I choose to get the more generic brand names of diapers and we were more satisfied with them than the name brand. For example, I found the CVS brand to be wonderful. Every so often, CVS would put them on sale for buy one, get one free and I would buy four packs. Not only did I save money on diapers when that happened, I also did not have to worry about buying more for several weeks.

I have no idea how many diapers I have changed for my daughter during the two and a half years it took her to be old enough for potty training. I do know that I can count on one hand, the number of diapers that my husband has changed in that time frame. Every time he smelled a stinky diaper, he would disappear from sight immediately. He would make a big point of handing her to me before he would leave the house with her so that I would check her diaper. It drove me crazy.

Despite all the challenges, we are still going strong. I am quite sure that my daughter has to be relieved to not being wearing diapers or pull-ups anymore either. I do not imagine that they would be too comfortable, but obviously I was too young to remember wearing them. Maybe that is why children tend to take off running when their diapers are off. Being naked might feel like pure freedom to them. Small wonder they make us chase them all around the house until we catch them.
