Italian Alps Hiking Holidays

Self guided & guided mountain walks in Italy

Forming the natural border with Switzerland, France, Slovenia and Austria, the Italian Alps in northern Italy are a landscape made of breath-taking contrasts. Highlights of your hiking holiday in the Italian Alps include the Three Peaks (Tre Cime) in the Dolomites, Aosta Valley, cliffs of the Tofana Massif and the country’s oldest national park Gran Paradiso. Then there are the spectacular views of famous peaks such as the Monte Rosa, Mont Blanc and Matterhorn that you can take in on many walks.

An alpine walking holiday in Italy actually stretches beyond the Alps and into the Apennines, otherwise known as the Apuane Alps. On quiet trails, discover the Apuanes’ scenery of white marble towers, chestnut woods, abysses and the largest cave system in Italy.

This is a region that is also rich in culture and history reflecting in the local architecture and with French, German and Italian all spoken.

The Alps hold a special place in every Italian’s heart and one reason for this, besides the scenery, is of course the food. With little influence from the outside world, most of the traditional dishes simply came about because villagers had to be creative with the local mountain produce. Some of our favourites to try are one of the many polenta dishes, the canederli dumpling, and the local take on fondue - with fontina cheese and egg.

There’s nothing quite like hiking in the Italian mountains to reconnect yourself with nature. The majesty and vastness of these mountain landscapes help to remind us of our place in the world. Many people who spend a holiday amongst the magnificent peaks of the Italian Alps often describe it as a life-changing experience.

From remote mountain walking in the Apuan alps to the famed limestone peaks of the Dolomites, and from the Tour du Mont Blanc to walking along chamois & ibex in the Gran Paradiso National Park, choose from our selection of excellent value alpine hiking holidays in Italy. A presto!
