The Yorkshire Dales are an idyllic pastoral landscape of green valleys criss-crossed by dry-stone walls marking field boundaries. Picturesque villages and hamlets consisting of little more than a pub and post office abound. Old farmhouses and ‘stone barns’ dot the valley sides. Above the Dales are open rolling moorlands rising to 600m (2000 feet) or more.

Walking the Dales is essentially a valley walk, traversing landscapes which are among those best-loved by the English themselves. Of course, for Yorkshire folk, there is absolutely nothing to compare with Yorkshire scenery, and one has to concede that they have a point. The hamlets and farmsteads of the Yorkshire Dales, with their dry-stone walls and outlying stone barns are, frankly, incomparable. If you walk nowhere else in England, walk here. You won’t regret it!

In the English regions that we travel through tourism is the main source of income for many local people. We support them by working with local family run accommodations and suppliers so that your money actually assists the community that hosts you.

Paddock to plate

The paddock to plate concept is one we encourage by choosing to work with accommodations that source produce from local farms. This provides you with fresher meals and ensures your money directly assists local economies.

Walking The Dales Way in 8 or 10 days | Walkers' Britain
Where to Go
Walking into Hardraw

Walk the Cleveland Way and see the remains of the Norman Rievaulx Abbey, and 13th century Whitby Abbey (but dating from the 7th century!), the Captain Cook Monument and Robin Hoods Bay with its cliff-hanging cottages.

Hike St Hilda's Way and journey through gorgeous Yorkshire countryside and visit eight churches and chapels all dedicated to St Hilda, as well as two other churches named after St Hedda and St Mary.

Follow the James Herriot Way, a walk designed to take in some of the countryside beloved by James Alfred Wight, the vet who wrote about his experiences in the Yorkshire Dales as James Herriot. These books became popular in the 1970s and 80s and spawned a film and a very popular television series 'All Creatures Great and Small'.

Weather
Culloden Tower

The climate of northern England is variable with rainfall occurring throughout the year (though more likely from October to April). The sunniest month is July. On average temperatures between April and October range from 4°C (39°F) -19°C (67°F), although it may be slightly cooler on higher sections. Being prepared with the correct clothing and equipment for the conditions is important as the going may be muddy underfoot in wet weather.

In central England and the Cotswolds, average temperatures range between 9 and 17 degrees Celsius in European spring, summer and autumn. The weather is rarely too bad for walking or cycling.

Please ensure your passport is stamped on arrival in the Schengen area.
